Chapter V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This study tried to investigate the benefits of the
intranets within an organization. Specifically, the researcher wanted to
identify the challenges and opportunities that institution face as a result of
Intranet technology; asses staffs uses of intranets within the organizations;
the way Mosscare adapted to intranets; and the factors affecting intranet
usage.
The data
were gathered through the use of a researcher-made questionnaire, which were
answered by the employees of Mosscare. The researcher wanted to know how these
respondents perceived the effect of intranets in their working methods.
Summary
On the basis of the data gathered
in relation to the statement of the problem, the following are the significant
findings:
1.
The
major users of the intranet technology in the company are those among the
Administration and Marketing departments probably because of the web pages
available in the internal network caters more on the said departments.
2.
According
to the data, almost half of the population scarcely uses the technology while
twenty-percent of the respondents stated that they use it seventy five percent
of the time they spend on the office.
3.
Based
on the employees’ reaction, over half of them stated that the online news
services about the company were rather important while almost three
quarters of the respondents stated that the leisure section is important. This
is affirmed by the remaining 28% stating that the web page is moderately essential.
4.
Based
on the said inquiry, the employees strongly agreed that Intranets could be used
for publishing not only text and graphics but also audio, video and interactive
applications.
5.
On the other hand, the respondents stated that the intranet
has not made the Mosscare more competitive against other organization. They
also disagreed that it has reduced the stress they acquire from work.
6.
The respondents asserted that it is not hard to utilize the
Mosscare intranet.
Conclusion
On the basis of the above summary of
findings in this study, this research came up with the following conclusions:
The technology of intranets has
significantly affected the culture of the organization through employing a much
faster rate of production and efficiency. Moreover, it is the personnel on the
rank and file position who benefits on the technology considering that almost
all their needs in correspondence and general information is provided for in
just a click of a mouse key.
Moreover, it could be concluded that
the implementation of intranet technology in the said company is still on its
infancy stage considering the considerable drawbacks perceived by the personnel
of Mosscare. Nonetheless, the company has been reaping the benefits of the
technology since it already adhered to one of the principles of efficiency,
automation. This means that the company has minimized the amount of paper files
making information in the company more manageable.
And lastly, the study concludes that
the personnel of the company are the fundamental barometers of the level of
efficiency provided by the intranets. In order to develop an ultimate intranet
system, a prior consultation among the employees would be advisable in order to
cater the needs of the rank and file.
Recommendation
The findings of the study as
well as the suggestions of the respondents helped the researcher prepare the
following recommendations:
The study encourages the
company, Mosscare, to develop its intranet technology. It has efficiently
provided the employees the materials they need to survive a working day.
However, the company should take into consideration the recommendation of the
respondents in this study. This way, they could address specific weaknesses on
the network.
The study also recommends that
the company provide basic computer training specifically for the use of their
intranet services. This would allow other employees to fully exploit the
potentials of the said service to facilitate the development of the company.
In the study’s literature review,
Hizman (1999) quoted the study of Canterucci stating that the effectiveness of
the intranet technology is hindered by the notion of the majority of the
personnel considering intranets as management propaganda. This might also be
true to Mosscare due to the concept of the respondents regarding the apparent
ineffectiveness of the technology. In this light, this study recommends that
the management communicate more with the employees in a less informal
surrounding in order to assure the latter that what the former is placing on
its intranets proves to be truthful and for the welfare of the latter.
Likewise, the study also
recommends adhering to the findings of the study made by Lai (1998). The study
posits that the intranet technology could also be used as a unifying factor for
a virtually dispersed company. The study recommends the company to empower the employees by providing a complete communication tool for
collaboration, interaction, and real-time sharing of information across
functional boundaries and organizational levels.
And
lastly, the researcher proposes to employ additional studies that will cover a
much larger population and a much wider coverage area. This would allow the
learners in the similar discipline to gauge on what improvement on intranet
technology should be employed. This would ensure the wider use of intranets as
a company treks its way to development through the help of automation,
self-reliance and self-efficacy.
